ANOTHER MONEY MAKER

I met a friend from back in the old days.  Speedy was wearing a smile, held out his hand and said, “Great to see you.  How long has it been?”

I replied, “A good while.  What’ve you been up to?”

Speedy said, “Same ole, same ole.  I’ve been working with Slick some, taking it easy mostly.”  (Slick is another old friend who shares a dislike for  regular nine to five jobs with Speedy.  When the two of them got together, they’ve always had some kind of an “angle” brewing.)

“Well, what have you guys been doing?”  I couldn’t wait to hear.  You can never tell about these two.

“Me and slick started this business, great potential, very little start-up money or overhead,” said Speedy.  “Worked out for a while, too.”

“What was it? What were you doing? “

“We worked out this deal where we would worry for other people.”

“What do you mean you would worry for other people?  What are you talking about?” I asked.

“You see, there’s tons of people out there who worry about everything, worry all the time.  Me and Slick were worrying for them, saving them from the strain, for a fee—$100 per month.”

I couldn’t help but notice speedy was talking in the past tense. I asked, “How did that work out?”

“Well, we got customers right off.  Worrying wears on folks.  They needed us, but the deal went bad.”

“What happened?”

Speedy said, “We started getting complaint calls and everybody had the same complaint.”

“What was their complaint?”

“They were all worrying that we weren’t worrying enough.  We hung it up and sent out a letter that said for them to just worry without us but don’t worry about getting a refund because you won’t.”

With a smile and a chuckle, I said, “Nice try boys.”

Speedy said, “Yeah, you know Slick.  His ideas don’t always play out too good, but he never runs short on ideas.  One day after we give up on the worry business, Slick comes to me and says he’s got another idea.  It will work like the worry business, but rather than worrying for folks, we’ll pray for them—$100 a month.”

I told Slick, “Slick, as usual, you’re a day late and a dollar short.  Some of them TV preachers have already got that market cornered.”

  1. I do agree that SOME TV preachers — and some not on TV as well — are in the work for all the wrong reasons. But not all of us are, thank the Lord. When I’m on TV or radio either one, I’m focused only on getting as much Word into people as I possibly can, and I never ask for money. But it’s a cute story and has a whole lot to say about how stupid it is to worry. 🙂

    • My phrase, “SOME of them TV preachers,” was more than intentional. The single word, SOME, I used in ANOTHER MONEY MAKER indicts the guilty and defends the innocent. I trust “some of them TV preachers,” in some way, dissipates the cloud of the guilty that obscures the shine of the innocent. The truth has a way of doing that. God bless you and thank you for your comment.
